Árbol fosilizado

Este árbol fosilizado, que forma parte de la colección del Museum de Mánchester. Tiene 300 millones de años de antigüedad, y es uno de los más grandes del mundo.

Lleva expuesto en la Sala de Fósiles del Museo desde finales de la década de los 80 del siglo XIX.

Fue descubierto el 8 de Julio de 1.886 en Clayton,cerca de Bradford, al noroeste del núcleo urbano de Mánchester, y fue descrito como “el mejor espécimen de su tipo jamás encontrado”. Los curadores del Museo estaban tan ilusionados y emocionados con su hallazgo, que viajaron en tren desde Mánchester para verlo in situ. Hay una fotografía que documenta este momento y que se conserva en los archivos del Museo.

Esta especie de árbol podía crecer hasta los 30 metros de alto, y quizás sorprenda que esté emparentada con ciertos tipos de musgos actuales.
