This is a piece of melted metal and glass from the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima. In World War II, atomic bombs were made and dropped on two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing at least 100,000 people, mostly civilians.
Nuclear power to generate energy comes from the same process. Nuclear power plants are thought by many to be a good solution to help bridge the gap between fossil fuels and renewable energy, as they are relatively safe and have the benefits of fossil fuels (e.g. not weather-dependent) while also not generating greenhouse gases.
