Researching this object, I have learnt that Alderley Edge is the oldest metal-mining site in England. From the Bronze Age to the 20th century, this location was a hub for extracting copper, lead, and cobalt.
The National Trust owns most of the mines, but they can be accessed through the Derbyshire Caving Club, that in addition to exploring and maintaining them, offers guided tours and open days.
