En el punto más alto de la «chinomanía» de la década de 1870, había más mancunianos con objetos chinos (y de estilo chino) en sus colecciones de los que habían ido a China.

Estas son parte de un juego de piezas de ajedrez talladas. Están hechas de marfil rojo y blanco, y fueron producidas a inicios del siglo XIX para el mercado de exportación europeo. Las piezas contienen esferas movibles, una dentro de otra, cada una tallada delicadamente.
