All’apice della “Chinamania” negli anni ’70 del 1800, più abitanti di Manchester possedevano oggetti cinesi (e in stile cinese) nelle loro collezioni rispetto a quanti ne fossero mai stati in Cina.

Questi pezzi scacchiera fanno parte di un set di pezzi scolpiti. Sono realizzati in avorio rosso e bianco e furono prodotti nei primi anni del 1800 per il mercato europeo di esportazione. Le basi incorporano sfere scolpite che si muovono liberamente, una dentro l’altra, ognuna finemente intagliata.
