Gli antichi Egizi ritenevano che il gatto e molti altri animali fossero le manifestazioni terrene di divinità. Questo oggetto è una scultura cava in legno rappresentante un gatto, animale sacro alla dea Bastet.

I raggi X hanno confermato che, come si era ipotizzato, questa scultura venne usata come bara per un gatto mummificato, il cui scheletro completo è visible sotto i bendaggi.

Non si era certi dell’esatto sito di provenenza in Egitto di questa scultura in legno rappresentante un gatto, finché non fu scoperta una lettera nei nostri archivi e una fotografia dimostrò che questo oggetto proveniva da Saqqara – la più vasta necropoli degli animali in Egitto.
