With bright white and blue beads and cowrie shells, this belt was made by the Kuba people from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, over 100 years ago. It was made next to the Sankuru river.
Cowrie shells were once used as money in this region, and so displaying them on a belt like this showed off the wealth and power of the wearer. These are still worn for ceremonial events by people today.
