El cangrejo gigante japonés (Macrocheira kaempferi) es el artrópodo más grande del mundo. En Japón, este cangrejo es conocido como takāshigani que significa ‘cangrejo de patas largas’. El cuerpo puede alcanzar a medir 40 cm de longitud, con una envergadura de 3,8 m y ¡con un peso de 19 kg!

El cangrejo gigante japonés del Museo de Mánchester fue donado por el Dr. J. H. Ashworth el 19 de enero de 1904 y sigue siendo el favorito de los múltiples visitantes del museo.
