Junto con muchos otros animales, los egipcios antiguos consideraban a los gatos como la personificación de dioses. Este objeto es una escultura vacía de madera de un gato, asociado con la diosa Bastet.

Los rayos X confirman la sospechada función de esta escultura: un sarcófago para un gato momificado, cuyo esqueleto entero puede verse en las vendas.

No se sabía exactamente si este sarcófago de gato venía de Egipto, hasta que apareció una carta en nuestros archivos que lo confirmó con una foto que muestra el objeto en Saqqara — el cementerio de animales sagrados más grande de Egipto.
