Questa alga fu scoperta nel 1855 e fu raccolta l’ultima volta nel 1886 a Port Jackson, vicino a Sydney, in Australia. Da allora non c’è più stata traccia di questo tipo di alga e oggi si pensa che sia estinta.

Le attività umane hanno sollevato il limo nell’area e le alghe fini come questa sono molto vulnerabili alla luce bloccata dal limo, quindi si pensa che questo sia il motivo per la sua scomparsa.
