This seaweed was discovered in 1855, and was last collected in 1886 in Port Jackson, near Sydney, Australia. Since then there has been no sign of the seaweed, and it is now thought to be extinct. Human activities stirred up the silt in the area, and fine algae like this are very vulnerable to the light being blocked out by silt, so this is thought to be the reason it disappeared.
