Maharaja este un elefant asiatic cu o poveste fascinantă. Acest elefant a inspirat multe lucrări de artă şi romane. A călătorit din India la Edinburgh, din Edinburgh la Belle Vue, apoi la Muzeul Manchester iar cel mai recent popas ȋn călătoria lui Maharaja a fost vara trecută ȋn gara Piccadilly.

Muzeul Manchester are o istorie lungă de colaborare cu comunităţile. In ultimii ani, unele obiecte din muzeu au poposit prin oraş: nişte shabti ȋn şcoli, un păun ȋntr-un … restaurant şi un elefant ȋn gara Piccadilly!

In anul 1872, proprietarii grădinii zoologice Belle Vue l-au cumpărat pe Maharaja de la un circ itinerant din Edinburgh. Elefantul ȋnsă nu s-a lăsat convins să ia trenul astfel cȃ ȋngrijitorul lui a trebuit să călătorească cu Maharaja pe jos cele 200 mile, călătorie ce a durat zece zile.

Este ziua ‘Salvaţi elefanţii’ #savetheelephantday , o zi ȋn care să conştientizăm lumea cu privire la pericolele pe care le ȋntȃmpină elefanţii şi diferitele dificultăţi pe care trebuie să le depăşească pentru a supravieţui.
