Maharajah – Maharajah

Maharajah on aasialainen elefantti, jolla on kiehtova tarina. Maharajah on ollut inspiraation lähde myös monille taideteoksille ja romaaneille. Belle Vuen eläintieteellisen puutarhan omistajat ostivat Maharajahin vuonna 1872 Edinburghissa liikkuneelta sirkukselta. Maharajahin oli tarkoitus matkustaa Manchesteriin (jossa Belle Vue sijaitsi) junalla, mutta sitä ei onnistuttu suostuttelemaan sisään junaan. Maharajahin hoitaja Lorenzo Lawrence käveli lopulta Maharajahin kanssa 200 mailin matkan Edinburghista Manchesteriin. Matka kesti 10 päivää. Maharajah matkusti siis ensin Intiasta Edinburghiin, sitten Belle Vuen eläintieteelliseen puutarhaan ja lopulta kuolemansa jälkeen Manchesterin museoon, jossa sen luuranko on ollut esillä Manchesterin galleriassa. Viimeisin pysäkki Maharajahin matkalla oli Piccadillyn rautatieasema vuonna 2019, jossa se oli esillä kahden viikon ajan. Manchesterin museo on tehnyt pitkään yhteistyötä eri yhteisöjen kanssa, ja Maharajahin esilläolo Piccadillyn juna-asemalla oli osa museon tavoitetta tuoda kokoelmiensa esineitä tavallisiin ympäristöihin, jossa ihmiset työskentelevät ja asuvat. Viime aikoina museo on asettanut esille shabti-veistoksia kouluihin, riikinkukon ravintolaan… ja tämän elefantin Piccadillyn rautatieasemalle!
