Der Himalaya-Monal ist der Nationalvogel von Nepal. Europäische Naturhistoriker gaben den Vögeln und Tieren, die sie in verschiedenen Teilen der Welt „entdeckten“, oft neue Namen. Brian Houghton Hodgson war einer der wenigen, die lokale Namen für Arten, die noch nicht in einer europäischen Sprache dokumentiert waren, in den europäischen Namen integrierte. Beispiele dafür sind der Himalaya-Monal, abgeleitet vom Urdu „moonal“ (auch bekannt als „danphe“ in Nepali), und die Himalaya-Cutia, abgeleitet vom nepalesischen „khutya“.

It was interesting to translate the idea that Hodgson decided to derive the European names for birds and animals from the local names. Deciding how to translate bird names was challenging.
