In Eastern Europe, birds somewhat similar to Himalayan monal include the common pheasant, the western capercaillie and the black grouse. They all belong to the pheasant family called Phasianidae. Like the Himalayan monal, the males are often more vividly coloured than the females and many of these birds spend much of their time on the ground.
