Maharajah è un elefante asiatico con una storia affascinante. Ha ispirato opere d’arte e romanzi.

I proprietari del Belle Vue Zoological Gardens comprarono Maharajah nel 1872 da un circo itinerante a Edimburgo. Ma Maharajah non poteva essere persuaso a prendere il treno, quindi il custode Lorenzo Lawrence camminò con Maharajah nel viaggio di 200 miglia, che durò 10 giorni. Ha viaggiato dall’India, ad Edimburgo, a Belle Vue, al Manchester Museum, e l’ultima tappa del viaggio di Maharajah è stata la stazione ferroviaria di Piccadilly nel 2019.

Il Manchester Museum ha una lunga storia di collaborazione con le comunità. Di recente, ci sono stati shabti nelle scuole, un pavone in un ristorante… e questo elefante nella stazione ferroviaria di Piccadilly!
