Moccassins from the Americas

Moccassins are a type of shoe from the native people of the Americas, usually made from deer leather to fit the size and shape of the wearer’s foot, and often decorated with beads or thread.

There are many different styles and designs for each of the native American ethnic groups in this part of the world, and the word ‘moccasin’ is originally from the Powhatan language from the Algonquin nation, but has been used by English speakers to refer to this style of shoe in general.

‘Fast fashion’ refers to mass-production of cheap clothes, which is common today and has environmental impacts both in their production and in the waste of products, so beautifully hand-decorated items are rarer in modern times.

What is the most beautifully decorated thing that you own?

    Did you know?
The Romanian and Moldovan blouse, known as the Ia, is linked to a UNESCO-recognised cultural tradition.
    Every pattern tells a story.
    Every stitch carries history.
    Every blouse connects generations.
That is why communities around the world celebrate the Universal Day of the Romanian and Moldovan Blouse every year on 24 June.
    Culture connects us all.

Mulți oameni cred că o ie este doar o cămașă tradițională.
    Realitatea este mult mai profundă.
    Ia vorbește despre cine suntem.
    Ea spune povestea familiilor noastre.
