പലരോടും അവരുടെ സംസ്കാരത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട പാനീയം എന്താണെന്ന് ചോദിച്ചാൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും പറയും ‘ചായ’. ചായ യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ കിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യയിൽ നിന്നാണ് വന്നത്, പക്ഷേ ലോകമെമ്പാടും വ്യാപിച്ചു. വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഇനങ്ങളും ചായ കുടിക്കുന്ന രീതികളും പല രാജ്യങ്ങൾക്കും അഭിമാനമായി മാറുന്നു – ഈജിപ്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള കർക്കഡെ, റോസാപ്പൂ മുകുളങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് കടും ചുവപ്പ് നിറത്തിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; തായ്‌ലൻഡിൽ നിന്നുള്ള കട്ടിയാക്കിയ പാല്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നിർമ്മിച്ച ‘ചാ യെൻ’ (‘ഐസ്ഡ് ടീ’); ജപ്പാനിൽ നിന്നുള്ള പച്ച മച്ച; കറുവാപ്പട്ട, ജാതിക്ക, ഗ്രാമ്പൂ, ഇഞ്ചി എന്നിവ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഇന്ത്യയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള മസാല ചായയും ഒരു പ്രത്യേക മണവും രുചിയും നിറഞ്ഞതാണ്.

This is an object from the Manchester Museum collection translated from English to the Indian language Malayalam.

Malayalam is a Dravidian language spoken very commonly in the Southern state of India called Kerala along with Indian territories Lakshadweep and Mahé, Puducherry.

Manchester has a vibrant Malayali community and a Manchester Malayalee association comprising of people from all age groups. This signifies the importance of having a translation in Malayalam of the museum objects thereby making the museum experience more welcoming, inclusive and wholesome.

    When I was a child some members of my family were living in Libya and I clearly remember my aunt mentioning karkadè once when visiting our home in Italy. A few years ago I spent some time in Jakarta and a lady who lived near my flat gave me some dried hibiscus flowers to make a drink which I guess is like karkadè. It was a deep shade of red and aromatic and delicious. The hibiscus flower is called “rosella” in Bahasa Indonesia.
